Roy's Famous Café

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Now many people will argue that the reason this is so, has something to do with starting off your metabolism or "refuelling" the energy you burnt off in your sleep - and while I suppose there is some truth to this, I believe there is a far truer reason.

Breakfast sets the mood of your day. If your breakfast is rotten - what hope has the rest of your day got?

For example, I once woke up to the sound of a jack-hammer, bit into a mouldy apple and drank a cup of cold coffee that I could have sworn had a fly floating in it. Needless to say I was pretty pissed off that my morning had gotten off to such a bad start and was consequently incapable of being a very nice person for the rest of the day. It almost turned me off breakfast for good.

But there's nothing like a weekend breakfast at Roy's (Victoria St, Potts Point) - I can vouch that it's a perfectly "safe" and comfortable place to spend your morning.

Not long after the New Year I met James there for a Saturday morning breakfast. I had recently put blonde foils in my hair and was feeling enormously dissatisfied with them (they have since been removed and brought back to their original lovely brunette status) - it was also an unbearably hot day, and I felt fat. Considering that these kind of days are common to most girls - it's a relief to know that Roy's is a place where (amazingly) it's OK to feel like that.

You have the choice of sitting outside (for those feeling slightly more attractive), inside (for those that want darkness and big sturdy wooden tables) or outside in their courtyard (where you can enjoy the benefits of fresh air and sun without having to have people watch you eat). Wherever you choose you can be sure of the same reliable and attentive service (what's more - it's as if the staff sense your potential morning ugliness and dress to match that feeling).

The menu is equally as suitable. No fancy totally-inappropriate-for-breakfast meals - Roy's menu tells you what they have, how they can cook it and leaves you to decide what you feel like (and they don't find a way to make one fried egg equal $20).

Even better they'll serve it quickly, it will taste good and they'll let you sit around drinking coffee for as long as you like.

Left to our own devices we were able to settle into our normal routines and focus entirely on ourselves (because let's face it, the best dining is when you can enjoy yourself and not simply eat and stare at your food).

As usual... James mentioned his figure then ordered something with plenty of cheese. I of course, had every intention of a healthy breakfast until I heard James' order and figured if he felt it 'allowed' to order something slightly fatty then surely it wouldn't matter if I ordered the Big Breakfast.

As usual, James had yet another exciting business idea that he needed to express with colourful enthusiasm (of course a few days later I would hear that he had scrapped this idea). I, as always expressed hints that planning yet another trip to Greece AND a new business was probably not the wisest idea given him being a few thousand in debt....but as usual he always managed to convince me that it was absolutely essential that he do both and I would agree.

As usual, James had some graphic story to tell about his latest weekend excitement, while I managed to eat my entire Big Breakfast, even though I had made a fuss about how big it looked when it first arrived.

And as usual - the time flew and although I felt it a shame that our timetables didn't allow for more of these breakfasts...I was...as usual...glad that I knew someone well enough to be a part of their pattern, and glad that my mood had been set just right for the rest of my day.
